Hey buddies,

It’s official, #2 Love Garden vs. #5 Star Bar are in the KVKL Awesome Bracket Championship game next Sunday, and #15 Ghosts vs. #17 West Coast Saloon will duke it out in the KVKL Less-Awesome Bracket Championship game.  I jumped around and watched a little bit of every early game.  I saw Star Bar depants Coach Candy’s Chalmersiz at Holcom Right.  I only saw a few innings of the Goats vs Pit game, but I heard both teams played great and it just boiled down to the team that made the fewest mistakes winning.  The Blue Collar Rockets took The Ghosts into extra innings, the final run being made in the bottom of the twelfth after the head ref made this season’s second Encroachment call, The Ghosts walked off with a win and later took down Los Luchadores at the same field.  I watched most of the Das Boot vs. Sacred Sword game, where Das Boot really showed off how powerful an offense they have by putting up 9 runs on the impeccable Sacred Sword defense.  I had to go ref a game on the other side of Holcom, so I didn’t see The Sword come back from a five point deficit to almost tie it up–would love to hear what happened.  Plenty of upsets, and plenty of great games, having the whole Week 2 at one location was pretty spectacular, and I loved seeing big crowds at each field. What games did you watch? What was your favorite play? What was the deal with that giant head in the outfield during the Das Boot vs. Love Garden game?

There has been a lot of talk about sportsmanship on the KVKL website, this blog, and our Facebook page.  People seem concerned about the direction the league is going in terms of competitiveness and what shapes our collective attitude towards the game, but I think as we near the end of our tenth season it’s important to remember how many absolutely awesome people and teams are involved in this massive league, and why we do spend every Sunday of the summer running around and boozing it up in triple-digit temperatures.  To recognize what makes this league great, I want to introduce the Sunday(s) in the Park Most Fun Wins trophy.  The most fun wins mentality was first introduced to me in 2007 by my former teammate Justin “Soobs” Atwater-Taylor after the Late Fees’ first disastrous season–we didn’t have a winning record but we partied our asses off and I fell in love with the KVKL.  Below you will find a poll, the winner of this poll gets an awesome trophy.  You can vote for your own team, but that probably means your not very fun.

Sunday(s) in the Park presents The Most Fun Wins Trophy!

Love,

Coach Billy Gay Cyrus

I voted for Das Boot since I couldn’t vote for my own team. It’s impossible to pick only one team but I really like how Boot combines extreme athleticism and talent with a hefty dose of good-natured ribbing and shenanigans.

You are spot on with your assessment of the league, Mick. We really do have a wonderful collection of people, and it was an absolute pleasure to wander around the games last night. The Most Fun Wins Trophy is a brilliant idea, and whichever team is chosen should feel extremely proud.

I have to tip my cap to the Ghosts for a great game last night. That was the best game we played in all year, and if our season had to end, at least it ended with a gem like that one.

Congratulations to the four teams that survived the insanity of the last two weeks. Can’t wait for the games this Sunday!

Gotta say that I saw a lot of good sportsmanship yesterday. Our game with the Star Bunt Bunticudas (I bunted twice against them, too… after they did it first, of course. Even had an RBI–Run Bunted In!) had a hitch in the early going where Chris Marshall burned me deep and his kick bounced over the fence, off the Distance Marker inside the Foul Pole and back into the field of play. But both teams’ captains and the Sacred/Boot refs coolly discussed the matter and settled on a ground rule double which I believe was the correct call. It was very civilized and, despite taking almost 5 minutes, did not really detract from the game. Kudos to the Cudas for the great game and the all-night kicking clinic–Look out Squids, there’s Barricudas in the water!

Oh yeah, and I DID vote for my own team not because I’m not fun but because of the fun I had with them. I can’t think of another team that danced as hard, employed more DJs, played with more beers in hand, and finished with an enviable 10-3 record. I can honestly say that the disappointment I feel in being knocked out of the tournament in the quarters is fully overshadowed by the success my team had this season at having a damn good time! I have a short memory for losses but the good times the Chalmdog Millionaires shared this summer will live on for a life time. Mad props to the whole league for the best season yet!!

Too many fun teams, hard to narrow down. Not voting for my team, although I came back this year, cause win or lose the people on Lyon have fun no matter what.
Soobs-You guys are close, but I believe the Lyon is the most beer holding and drinking team, if not I blame myself for not drinking enough this year.

I voted for the harpies. Even though my team didn’t play them I was able to scrimmage with them a few times. Everytime I saw them it was clear they were out to have a good time. They really kept the words “play” and “game” in mind. I love their spirit and enthusiasm. Most fun!

Candle pants and company, for sure. Of course I wouldn’t trade the merry bunch of squids for anything.

Just want to recognize Screamers and Das Boot. Screamers were short gals and two of their best guys, but made the most of what they had. They gave us a hell of a game earlier in the season and I would have expected the same if they had all their players. Hats off to Das Boot for a good game, and I have to say that they get a bad wrap considering they have some of the nicest guys in the league—Chris, Phil, and Brad. We were fortunate to be able to slow them down.

Thanks to the refs for volunteering and calmly sorting out some tough calls.

Definitely looking forward to playing Star Bar, perhaps the hottest team in the league. For you KVKL history buffs, Star Bar’s lineage can be traced back to the Eastsiders, who played Love Garden in the 2006 and 2007 championship. Although no one currently on the team played for the Eastsiders during those years (that core group is now the Swarm), this will represent the third time our teams play each other for the championship.

Swarm’s ghetto-blaster is branded, uses car batteries to power it, and plays wu-tang. I rest my case.

not that wu-tang doesnt have a long and lovely discography to choose from, but sometimes you need a lil top gun or jock jams to really get your body movin…

I’m feeling pretty good about my bracket b/c I did pick das boot to beat sword (sorry sword) *(also, love you das boot!). And I picked star bar to beat chalmeriz. Not feeling too good though b/c my less awesome bracket is milfabumpin’ f-ed. I did not pick either ghosts or west coast to loose the 1st round of the tourney.
