2011 KVKL Tournament

The brackets are out!  I’m particularly excited about losing to Channel 6 again this year and getting accused of sandbagging.  With the amount of talent in the league this season, I can’t wait to see which teams ranked under ten make a run for the top spot, and which top teams fall early. Let us know what your thoughts are on the seeding and bracket in general.  Should we do another bracket challenge?

Cheers,

Coach Billy Gay Cyrus

The system used to rank the tourney has FLAWS??? Quick, someone, now’s the time to forth with your flawless system and save us from this complacent and self-serving board!!! Anyone…

I don’t use the facebook, so I’ll have start the bitching thread here. Though I was not able to attend the seeding meeting last night, I would have added to the consensus of the room. I know the Slowride folks are upset about their seeding, and frankly I feel bad for them. They became a one-seed by upsetting* a short-handed, but quite frankly, better team (it’s cool, I have seen the OUTCOME of every game both teams have played this year). Then they looked unimpressive in their rank play games expect for hanging in with a dehydrated and still-tripping-balls Sacred Sword. Ultimately though, since Slowride did not play Star Bar or Das Boot, and beat* (some of) Rangelife, it don’t just feel right.

As far as going completely objective, overall record just don’t cut it as it fails to really consider strength of schedule. In a rank play system where your second-half schedule is based on your first-half performance, those second half wins or losses need to be taken with a grain of salt. Slowride and West Coast would be in a 5-way tie for the ninth seed and I assume that you’d use what rank they earned to break said tie, but would West Coast be 6-4 if they played Slowride’s schedule. Oh HELL no.

Just using the ranks and rank-play standings to seed the tourney also lacks some consideration of strength of schedule, as not all divisions have been created equally. Slowride won their division*, but the poorest performing division in rank play. Since Das Boot didn’t get to play Slowride, should they have no chance to be ranked higher because their only losses are to Rangelife and Pita Pit? What about Star Bar? Losing to Sword and Das Boot (and beating rangelife) gives them no shot at getting a better seed than Slowride just because they beat* Rangelife?

RPI has Love Garden no. 1. RPI thus losses any claim to a flawless system.

Personally, I think some, repeat some, subjectivity should factor into the rankings. Typically, I hear people advocating for the proper system to be the one that benefits them the most (goooooooooooooooo RPI!!!).

Bottom line, I like the look of it. It looks like there’s more depth in the tourney than in year’s past. Should make for some great match-ups and perhaps some epic upsets as well. Ultimately the seeds don’t mean shit.

Bottom line: you’re going to have to play well and beat some tough competition or your season will end.

p.s. – I’m currently watching a little coach be a complete ass to the umps on national television. At least we’re not THAT bad. (are we?)

“Ultimately the seeds don’t mean shit” – Spoken like a Pabst-swilling Yoda, wise one you are, young Phil. No matter how you’d ever slice it, some kids will be very vocal about how thin, or too thick, or moldy their slice is. Frankly, I’m glad I got a slice, and as Mr. Adams said, if I don’t bring my A-game (especially because it shriveled up while I was busy bitching about my draw), then fuck me anyways, and send me home with a lollipop and a slap on the ass, cause that’s all that I deserve

Alright, well good luck to everyone …. even you whiny bitches :-)

I completely agree with everything you’ve said here, Phil. This tournament bracket, just like the NCAA basketball tournament will never be without perceived flaws. The bottom line is, to win the tourney you have to win 5 games in a row(4 if you’re pita pit), and if you don’t bring your A game your season ends with a loss. And other than members of Slowride I think the only people that don’t agree with your post are the Chalmersiz players who used to play for Rangelife haha.

If the seeds don’t mean shit (a sentiment I largely agree with), then it seems that it would have been better to seed the teams straight up using the pools, then rankings within each pool, rather than trying to worry about whether it was “right” or not to have Slowride as the 4-seed.

let’s do seedings by the amount of beer drank throughout the year or we could put all the teams on a dart board and just throw. just kidding the tourny bracket looks a o.k. to me.
